St. Lazarus of Bethany (image)

St. Lazarus Press launched in 2023 in response to two urgent needs: those of the Church of St. John the Evangelist, as we face the loss of our historic building after struggle with repair costs and redevelopment regulations; and those of the city of Montreal, where we are the unique Anglo-Catholic liturgical and spiritual presence.

St. John’s has been entrusted with a special spiritual heritage that has spoken to many Canadians before us, and that, with God’s help, we will fight to keep alive. Although circumstances may force St. John’s to part with our historic building, the Press ensures that we continue to care for Montreal and the wider world by sharing knowledge and resources about the Anglo-Catholic way of living close to Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Why St. Lazarus?

St. John’s has chosen St. Lazarus of Bethany as the patron of its publishing operation because of his close association with Our Lord’s promise of the resurrection from the dead. In the Gospel according to St. John, Jesus raises Lazarus again, four days after his death - a long enough time that all other hope for Lazarus’ recovery had been thoroughly exhausted.

We believe that God raises dead things to life and makes all things new even now, in anticipation of the final bodily resurrection from the dead and the renewal of all creation. Remembering St. Lazarus strengthens us to defiantly proclaim that Our Lord Jesus Christ is “the Resurrection and the Life” by sharing what we know, in face of myriad challenges in a world surrounded by death.

In addition to supporting the Press by purchasing our books, you can support the Church of St. John the Evangelist by direct donation, and by praying for the intercession of St. Lazarus in our parish life.

O God our Father, whose Son Jesus Christ enjoyed the friendship and hospitality of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus of Bethany: Open our hearts to love thee, our ears to hear thee, and our hands to welcome and serve thee in others, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord; who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
